Standards Setting Body

The Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey appointed by the relevant Health and Safety authority for each area.

Standards Setting Body

What Is It?

Provided by Capita, Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the official gas registration body in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and Northern Ireland and Guernsey on 1 April 2010. All persons employed to work on gas appliances must be registered with Gas Safe Register and carry an ID card in order to work lawfully.

The introduction of Gas Safe Register followed a review of gas safety by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 2006 which, after consultation with the gas industry, engineers and the public, led to the decision to change to a new registration scheme.

Gas Safe Register Aims

Gas Safe Register acts as a licensing body. It aims to improve gas safety and bring enhanced benefits to gas consumers and installers across the UK. It maintains an up-to-date register of gas engineers who are qualified to install or repair gas fittings and appliances. It has systems in place to check the competence of gas engineers, inspect their work and to deal with complaints about unsafe work.

Energy & Utility Skills works closely with Gas Safe Register and the wider gas industry to establish and streamline the competency requirements for registration.
