National Occupational Standards and Apprenticeship Frameworks

National Occupational Standards

A National Occupational Standard is a document that describes what an employee needs to know, the skills they need to have and the behaviours they need to demonstrate in order to be deemed competent at their job. They can be used in a number of different ways and are available for every industry in the United Kingdom.

Energy & Utility Skills is responsible for setting and reviewing the National Occupational Standards for our sector. National Occupational Standards are developed by employers and experts in our industries under the guidance of the Energy & Utility Skills Group. They are then subject to formal consultation and approval processes. National Occupational Standards are approved by UK government regulators, to make sure they reflect industry practices across the whole UK.

The most up-to-date standards for various industries are kept on the National Occupational Standards database.

We invite all employers to work with us on our review of National Occupational Standards.

Apprenticeship Frameworks

Energy & Utility Skills is responsible for developing apprenticeship frameworks in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales across the power, gas, water and waste management sector. In England, Northern Ireland and Wales Energy & Utility Skills also has responsibility for issuing apprenticeship frameworks.

We invite all employers to work with us on our review of Apprenticeship Frameworks.
